- The Advocate - This is the site for
the national gay and lesbian magazine, The Advocate. It is filled with the same
well-written, informative articles that appear in the print version. In addition there is
also a message board, a chat room, and an incredible number of links to other gay-related
sites.
- Answers to Your Questions About Sexual
Orientation and Homosexuality - This site, produced by the American Psychological
Association, is an educational FAQ regarding sexual orientation. Its purpose is to defeat
stereotypes by refuting such ideas as Homosexuality is an illness and
Gays cant be good parents. It is very well done.
- Gay and Lesbian National Hotline - The Gay and
Lesbian National Hotline provides toll-free peer counseling, information and referrals.
The web site includes a list of their numerous services, and a list of local gay and
lesbian sites. There is also a place to register for inclusion as a referral business.
- The Gayellow Pages - The Yellow Pages
can be searched by location or subject, and there is an index for each. There is a
separate source for women, a section on how to be listed and a list of stores that sell
the Gayellow Pages. In addition, there is a link to a large Matthew Shepard Online
Resources site.
- The Gay Gene - A forum for the
discussion of the scientific, social, political, and religious implications of research
into the origins of sexual identity. Moderated by Chandler Burr, author of A Separate
Creation: The Search for the Biological Origins of Sexual Orientation.
- The Norman Institute - The institute is a
national non-profit organization dedicated to providing factual information to individuals
and their families struggling with gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues. This site
includes a section devoted to teen suicide prevention, a bookstore, a directory of faith
communities, and a national calendar of events.
- Queer America - A searchable database
published by The National Coalition for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Youth. With over 4,000 entries, it is a large collection of lesbian and gay
resources, and includes information on community centers, support organizations, PFLAG
(Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) chapters, lesbigay youth groups,
etc. Search for local information by zip and area code.
- Sexual Orientation:
Science, Education, and Policy - This site features work by Dr. Gregory Herek, a noted
authority on antigay prejudice (or homophobia), hate crimes, and AIDS stigma, and his
Northern California Community Research Group at the University of California, Davis. It
provides factual information about sexual orientation and HIV/AIDS to promote the use of
scientific knowledge for education and enlightened public policy.
- Straight Answers: How to Answer Questions About Gay
Life and Change Anti-Gay Attitudes - The author of this site states, "I hope that
this site will help gay people to answer the questions that people ask us about
homosexuality, and eliminate the unnecessary hostility, uncertainty and suspicion with
which we are viewed so often." He attempts to do this by addressing difficult
questions that gay people are often asked, such as Dont gay people already
have all the rights they need? This is a very thought provoking site.
- University of Toronto
Sexual Education and Peer Counselling Centre - This site answers some very general
questions regarding gay and lesbian sexuality. There is also a section dedicated to gay
and lesbian youth.
- University of Wisconsin Ten Percent
Societys Queer Studies Page - This site aims to highlight the field of queer
studies and its connections to a broad array of academic disciplines through essays, a
language guide, an introduction to the basics of queer theory, and a page of links which
lead to relevant sites around the world.
- Washington Blade Online - The Internet version
of D.C.'s premiere gay newspaper has extensive coverage of national and local news, plus
personals and classifieds. This is a great site to check out whats happening in the
nations capitol.
FAMILY.
- Adopt: Assistance Information Support
- This is a bibliography for gay adoption produced by the National Adoption Information
Clearinghouse.
- Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (COLAGE)
- Dedicated to the needs and growth of daughters and sons of lesbians and gay men. Founded
in 1988, COLAGE has come to function as the headquarters for an international network of
local groups of kids and adults. There is a link to Alternative Family Magazine,
as well as press releases, volunteer opportunities and information on the 1999 National
Family Week in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
- Family Pride Coalition - This groups
homepage includes a photo gallery of alternative families, plus information on dealing
with schools, local parent groups and custody information. It offer free resources on
co-parenting and adoption.
- Family Q - "The purpose of this
web site is to provide lesbians and gay men with access to information regarding building
and maintaining a family." To achieve this purpose, the organization provides news
stories on gay families, a list of books and articles, information on starting a
family, a chat room and guestbook.
- National Freedom to Marry - A nationwide coalition
committed to winning and keeping the freedom to marry for same-gender couples. Included
are news articles, information on National Freedom to Marry Day, and a state by state
legal guide for same-sex marriage.
- PFLAG: Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and
Gays - Promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
persons, as well as their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy.
Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides an opportunity for dialogue
about sexual orientation and gender identity and acts to create a society that is healthy
and respectful of human diversity. There is a list of chapters, a store, press releases,
news stories on P-FLAG, and information on the National Conference in 2000. There is a
unique section on how to deal with a spouses coming out.
YOUTH.
- The Cool Page For Queer Teens - This
is a really great, hip site for teens. Again, all the most common questions are answered,
but there are also sections like What To Do if Youve Been Outed
Unexpectedly, When Youre Having Trouble at School, Sex, AIDS
and You and Feeling Good About Religion. There is also a wonderful page
for parents of gay youth.
- OutProud - The National Coalition for Gay,
Lesbian & Bisexual Youth serves the needs of these young men and women by providing
advocacy, information, resources, and support. OutProud! provides outreach and support to
teens just coming to terms with their sexual orientation and to those contemplating coming
out and can assist in finding local sources of friendship and support.
- Out Youth Austin - Out Youth's mission is to
promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being of sexual minority youth whereby
they can openly and safely explore and affirm their identities. Out Youth seeks to fulfill
this purpose through providing direct services to youth 22 and under, advocacy, outreach,
and general community education.
- Read This Before Coming Out
to Your Parents - This is a nice document authored by P-FLAG and put on the Web by the
University of Wisconsin. It discusses what a teen might expect from his or her parents
after coming out. While stating that each family is unique, the site discusses different
stages that are usually experienced and how to better cope with each one.
- Youth Assistance Organization - Youth Assistance
Organization (YAO or YOUTH.ORG) is a service run by volunteers, created to help
self-identifying gay, lesbian, bisexual and questioning youth. YAO exists to provide young
people with a safe space online to be themselves. Besides addressing the most common
questions, such as What do I do if I think Im gay?, there is a unique
link that includes information on LGBT equity organizing in K-12 public education in the
USA.
HEALTH.
- AmFar-American Foundation for Aids Research -
Contains articles and press releases on the many activities of the American Foundation for
AIDS Research. Articles provide suggested references for further reading.
- The Body - An exhaustive resource for
AIDS related information. There are over 20,000 documents updated daily. The five
main subjects cover AIDS Basics and Prevention, Treatment, Conferences, Quality of Life,
and Government. There are also bulletin boards, treatment resources and insights from
experts.
- Center for Disease Controls National Prevention
Information Network - CDC's programs include support for state and local prevention
activities, a national public information network and educational programs in the nation's
schools. There is also an FAQ section, a bulletin board and publications available for
order or download.
- CDC HIV/AIDS Statistics
- The latest data summarized from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's semiannual
HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report.
- Elton John AIDS Foundation - The Elton John AIDS
Foundation is an international non-profit organization funding direct patient care
services and AIDS prevention education. There is a list of fundraising events and
fundraising merchandise available for purchase (by phone).
- Gay Mens Health Crisis
(GMHC) - Founded by
volunteers in 1981, GMHC is the oldest and largest not-for-profit AIDS organization in the
United States. GMHC offers support services to more than 9,500 men, women and children
with AIDS and their families in New York City annually, as well as education and advocacy
for hundreds of thousands nationwide. A library link provides fact sheets, a newsletter,
statistics and a resources catalog. There are also press releases, a section on living
with AIDS, and a section on how we can help put an end to HIV.
- Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
Lesbian Health Project - This site helps to identify and address the unique health
needs of lesbians. A large portion of the page explains what the HRC is doing in the area
of lesbian health. You will also find links to a bibliography, an article on lesbians and
cancer, and many general health links.
- The Names Project - The mission of the NAMES
Project Foundation is to use the AIDS Memorial Quilt to help bring an end to the AIDS
epidemic. The site is extensive and includes a history of the quilt, a display schedule, a
list of names searchable image database (contains over 78,000 names and 41,000 images), a
store, and a list of volunteer opportunities.
- The Underground - This unique site
foremost includes a database of AIDS treating physicians who use different types of
alternative methods. There is also a page of success stories and a page of HIV and AIDS
stories in the news. There are numerous links and a chat room.
RELIGION.
- Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons -
Affirmation is a fellowship of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and their family and friends who
share the common bond of the Mormon experience.
- Dignity - Gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgendered Catholics and their friends in over 80 chapters across the
United States.
- GayJews.Org - GayJews.Org provides
up-to-date, accurate information for Orthodox Jews who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or
transgendered. This site includes numerous links.
- Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community
Churches - Worldwide Christian denomination serving gays and lesbians in 300 cities in

- Arenal - The Spanish-speaking
lesbian, gay, and bisexual home page in both Spanish and English, with information about

- The Blackstripe - The Blackstripe web site
includes numerous news articles, astrology, a discussion group, personal ads and a

- Chingusai - Chingusai is the
Korean bisexual, lesbian and gay organization based in Los Angeles. Their web site
includes a membership link, a coming out link, and a short bibliography of writings by
Queer Korean-Americans.
- Llego - This is the site of the National Latina/o
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization, whose mission is "to strengthen
Latina Lesbian, Latino Gay, bisexual, and transgender communities at local, national and
international levels by facilitating access to cultural, political, and community
development resources." Here you can join the organization, download its publications
and find out more information on the National Conference taking place in San Diego and

- National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum -
The forum has three main programs which it explains in depth on the web page. They are The
AIDS Prevention Team, The National Field Program which is a grassroots effort, and The
National Leadership Conference. Activities, press releases and programs are also listed.
- Queer
Asian Pacific Resources - There are coming out resources, womens resources and
youth resources here. Theres also a list of famous Queer Asian Pacific (QAP) people,
films relating to QAPs, books, plays and articles on QAPs, newsletters and publications.
There is also an e-mail list and links.
AGING.
Classic Dykes Online - This
is the online site for lesbians in midlife and beyond, and was created to increase their
visibility. There are numerous resources including lesbian health links and general aging
resources. Also included are late bloomer stories and poetry, personal home pages and a
matchmaking service for women.
COMING OUT.
- AllTogether.com: A Place to Explore Sexuality and
Coming Out - This project was the result of a Boston Gay Lesbian Bisexual Speakers
Bureau project to create a document of common questions and answers about homosexuality.
The most unique aspect of this site is that there is a panel with whom you can
communicate. A guest to the site can choose a person based on a short description and
e-mail a question to that person.
- Human Rights Campaign's National Coming
Out Project (NCOP) - The Human Rights Campaign sponsors both National Coming Out Day
(every October 11th) and The National Coming Out Project. This site has
information on how to host a NCOP party, how to become a member of the campaign, and how
to support their public education and outreach programs. There is also a list of
additional resources including organizations, religious organizations and a book list.
- Stepping Out: Coming Out
Stories on the Web - These are stories submitted by individuals describing their
particular coming out experiences.
LAW.
- ACLU Gay and Lesbian Rights -
Includes briefing papers on where the American Civil Liberties Union stands on gay rights.
There is also information on two court cases in which the ACLU has taken a stance.
- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (LLDEF)
- A national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of
lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV through litigation, education, and public policy
work. Headquartered in New York City, with offices in Los Angeles and Chicago, LLDEF has
national and regional expertise in all aspects of sexual orientation- and HIV-related
policy and law.
- National Gay and Lesbian Law Association (NLGLA) - A
national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, and
affiliated lesbian and gay legal organizations. Established in 1988 and an affiliate of
the American Bar Association since 1992, NLGLA sponsors year-round regional and local
events throughout the United States. There are news articles, events lists, membership
information and a contact list.
- Queer Legal Resources - An extensive
collection of materials devoted to gay and lesbian legal issues, including a monthly
summary of cases important to gay/lesbian and HIV/AIDS jurisprudence.
- Servicemembers Legal Defense Network - With a
nationwide network of over 200 attorneys from law firms all over the nation, SLDN offers
legal advice and assistance to service members. In addition, SLDN carefully documents
abuses of the military policy on homosexuals and uses the data gathered from the field to
push for policy change. Includes What to Do If You Are Under Investigation, Alerts, Press
Releases and a Survival Guide.
HISTORY AND ARCHIVES.
- Lesbian Herstory Archives -
The archives, housed in New York City and begun in 1973, are the largest in the world. It
houses over 20,000 volumes, 12,000 photographs, 300 special collections, 1,600 periodical
titles, 1,300 organizational and subject files, thousands of feet of film and video
footage, art and artifacts, musical records and tapes, posters and T-shirts, buttons and
personal memorabilia. Through this site, it is possible to contact the Archives'
volunteers for further information or research.
- Lesbian History Project -
Affiliated with the Lesbian Legacy Library & Archives of the ONE
Institute/International Gay & Lesbian Archives, there are numerous links to lesbian
history on the Net.
- ONE Institute: International Gay and
Lesbian Archives - This organization is affiliated with The University of Southern
California and is a not-for-profit educational organization. The Institute also contains a
Lesbian Legacy Collection and a Gay and Lesbian History Series. There is also an
acquisitions list and a special events list.
- People with a History - People
with a history includes hundreds of original texts and discussions. It addresses
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history in all periods and in all regions of the
world. There are many links to scholarly papers, as well as to web sites, and in many
instances, images.
SPORTS AND RECREATION.
- Federation of Gay Games - Since 1982, the Gay
Games have been a powerful force for positive change around the world. The Federation is
the parent organization of the Games, and at this site, you can register to become a
member, receive the newsletter, sign up for volunteer service, and contact the
organization through e-mail.
- Gay Games VI & Cultural Festival, Sydney
2002 - The next Games will take place September 2002 in Sydney, Australia. The Games
have long been a symbol of inclusion, encouraging participants of diverse ability united
in their freedom of sexuality. There are two main elements of the sports program -
official sports and demonstration. There are a total of 31 official sports. Expect this
site to grow as the event grows closer.
- International Gay and Lesbian
Outdoor Organizations (IGLOO) - A loose network of gay, lesbian and bi-sexual outdoor
groups from around the world. IGLOO's primary function is to serve as a network builder
and sponsor a biannual "jamboree." IGLOO also sponsors Gay Ski Week in Stowe,
Vermont.
- North American Gay Volleyball
Association (NAGVA) - An entirely gay run organization to promote the sport of
volleyball. At this site, you can join the association, find out more about tournaments
and their host cities, and see if travel discounts are available.
ENTERTAINMENT.
- The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film
Festival - This is the site for the annual festival of works from Austin's independent
film community. You can become a member, volunteer for the Festival and/or read about the
history of the Festival.
- Cinema Q - A comprehensive
collection of plot summaries and information for dozens of queer-related films.
- Fresh Fruit Records - This site
includes a small selection of music by gay artists. You can find out information on a
particular artist and his or her works. The CDs are also available for purchase. The
selection should change every couple of months.
- Frameline Online - This non-profit organization
distributes, promotes, and funds queer film and hosts the annual San Francisco
International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. There are also reviews of selected films.
- Lavender Jane
Loves Womens Music - This site is devoted to womens music and
focuses primarily on "out, loud and proud" artists. There are numerous feature
articles, as well as a large listing of performers that includes a discography and notes.
- Lesbian and Gay Bookshops
- This web site is part of the Feminist Bookstores Index. The gay and lesbian section is a
geographical listing of bookstores throughout the United States and Canada. There is also
a link to worldwide gay and lesbian bookstores.
- Outmusic - A national organization in the U.S.
that works to create opportunities for gay composers, lyricists, and performers. The group
creates a newsletter, sponsors workshops and discussions, has created a gay compilation
CD, and sponsors music festivals.
- Popcorn Q - An online
database of queer film, with news, reviews, and a top ten. This is based on The
Ultimate Guide to Lesbian & Gay Film and Video and contains many video and audio
clips.
TRAVEL.
- gay-travel.com - Tours and cruises,
worldwide destinations, and weekly specials from "the largest gay & lesbian
online travel agency."
- Pride InfoNet - Pride InfoNet has an
extensive listing of gay related travel services from cruises to organized tours all over
the world. There is also a nice subject area that lists theme-related vacations like
martial arts, biking, golf and scuba. There is a hotel guide, weather information and
helpful travel info such as State Department reports and passport information. A great
place for planning a trip.
- Rainbow Destinations - Worldwide listings of
gay-friendly bed & breakfasts, country inns, and guest houses.
- thinkgay.com - Choose a city or state in the
U.S. and get information on accommodations, nightlife, and more. There are also tour
packages available.
- Woofbyte Gay/Lesbian Guides - This site
includes guides for Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Texas and for the cities of Austin, Dallas,
Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.
ORGANIZATIONS.
- ACLU Gay and Lesbian Rights -

- Gay and Lesbian Community Center
of San Antonio (GLCCSA) This local link is the home to San Antonios
gay and lesbian community center. The page lists volunteer opportunities, GLCCSA events,
gay friendly businesses throughout the city, has a page full of other links and also a
chat room. There is a good explanation of what the center does and the many, many
resources it provides.
- Human Rights Campaign - The Human Rights Campaign
works to end discrimination, secure equal rights, and protect the health and safety of all
Americans. The HRC lobbies the federal government on gay, lesbian, and AIDS issues,
educates the general public, participates in election campaigns, organizes volunteers, and
provides expertise and training at the state and local level. There is an extremely
helpful Issues Explained section and a Marketplace to order merchandise.
- International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission
(IGLHRC) - IGLHRC's mission is to protect and advance the human rights of all
people and communities subject to discrimination or abuse on the basis of sexual
orientation, gender identity or HIV status. At their site they provide news articles,
publications for sale, and a list of current actions in which they are participating.
There is also a world watch section that reports human rights offenses in countries all
over the world.
- National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) - The
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is a leading progressive civil rights organization
that has supported grassroots organizing and advocacy since 1973. In all its efforts,
NGLTF helps to strengthen the gay and lesbian movement at the national, state, and local
level. There are publications available for download, numerous press releases, e-mail
lists for activists/organizers and press members, and articles on recent news.
- Log Cabin Republicans - A 10,000 member
organization of gay and lesbian Republicans advocating gay issues within the Republican
Party. Includes news stories, press releases, and newsletters. There is also information
on the 1999 Convention in New York City.
- Partners Task Force for Gay & Lesbian
Couples - This site provides extensive information on issues of concern to same-sex
couples, including legal marriage and sources of support. Included is data on legal
marriage, information on ceremonial marriages, domestic partnership information and legal
necessities for couples. There are even some relationship tips! A great site.
